Description
This field test will produce a rigorous analysis of the technical and economic potential for a wind farm in and around theTown of Canso. The study, to be carried out by project partner Renewable Energy Services Limited (RESL), will includea business plan and a comprehensive community consultation process for implementation addressing marketingaspects for green power locally and sales on to the grid provincially that could become a template for replicationconsideration in other jurisdictions. Such a plant would be the first independent power production facility in Nova Scotia,under its NovaGreen brand. Assuming a wind farm displaced 16.6 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of coal-fired electricity per year,14.8 kilotonnes (kt) of CO2, 500 tonnes of NOx and 66 tonnes of SOx would be displaced. The Town of Canso hasindicated that it is willing to purchase a minimum of 40 per cent of the power. The project fits well with the Town’splanned environmental objectives and will have economic benefits and provide a hedge against the rising cost of fossilfuels.
