Description

Jasper is committed to high standards of environmental stewardship consistent with its location and role within a national park and world heritage site. It developed a community land use plan in 2001, but does not have an integrated or sustainability-focused strategic plan. In this study, it will partner with Jasper National Park on a sustainable community plan that reflects both its unique status and the priorities of Parks Canada. To be developed over a 10-year period, the plan will address the five pillars of sustainability: environmental, social, economic, cultural and governance. Emphasis will be placed on community consultation and engagement to promote acceptance of plan outcomes. Targets include: reductions in greenhouse gas emissions; improvements in air quality; greater renewable energy use; reductions in energy and water consumption; reductions in solid waste sent to the regional landfill and waste deposited at the transfer station; greater public awareness of environmental issues; and, green building guidelines for commercial and residential construction.
