Description
The Town of Quispamsis will build the QPlex Wellness and Conference Centre, a central, community-supported, multipurpose recreational building. The town expects to meet LEED Gold guidelines for the project, based on an initial forecast energy savings of 61.3 per cent relative to a similar building reference under the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. All planning has considered how to save energy and minimize the impacts on the surrounding natural landscape. The site selection process chose land that was already cleared, which is the least intrusive option. A geothermal heating and cooling system will divert recovered heat from the ice plant to heat the building, heat water for the building’s domestic supply and ice-making, and warm the outdoor pool. An enhanced building envelope, together with passive solar orientation, will reduce heat losses and gains through the roof, walls and windows. High-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and occupancy sensors will be used throughout to minimize energy consumption, and a stormwater management pond and several water-conserving measures will reduce the draw on well water. As one of only a handful buildings in New Brunswick built to LEED guidelines, the town expects that the QPlex project will generate interest in green buildings from investors, builders and potential occupants.
