Description
The City of Terrebonne will develop a sustainable development master plan for a green neighbourhood of approximately 7,000 residential units, businesses and light industries. The City’s development vision will be guided by the pilot version of U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria for neighborhood development. The sustainable neighbourhood design will be based on the following five major principles: protection and enhancement of the natural environment; creation of sustainable neighborhood units (community living); sound management of infrastructure and equipment (sustainable transportation, water and waste water management and collection and use of rainwater); management of energy resources; and integration of the sustainable community approach to the decision-making process. In order to maximize performance, the City will call upon a multi-disciplinary team including engineers, architects, landscapers, urban planners and an illustrator who will work together during the development of the plan. The deliverables of this study will be a master plan including a land use plan, infrastructure plan, traffic management plan and regulatory framework for the sustainable development of the proposed neighborhood. It is estimated that the eventual construction and operation of a 7,000 unit sustainable residential neighbourhood will emit 33,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) less per year, when compared to a traditional residential development.
