Description

The Town of Hearst will work with the Hearst Economic Development Corporation to implement a plan to guide the community toward its sustainable development goals. The 16-month planning process will begin with the formation of working committees in key sectors such as water, wastewater, solid waste management, green building design, contaminated site remediation (brownfields) and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction. Building on an ongoing community consultation process, the project team will identify and evaluate various environmental management strategies. Central to the plan will be the design of an environmental industrial park on remediated brownfield lands that would include a high-efficiency lumber mill, biofuel and energy production plants based on mill waste products and a waste-heated greenhouse complex. The plan will also include an extensive community awareness and education campaign targeted at increasing recycling, composting and water and energy efficiency. The plan’s combined initiatives will reduce resource consumption, improve soil and water quality, reduce GHGs and shrink the community’s ecological footprint.
