Description

The Municipality of Les Cèdres will adopt a sustainable development plan allowing it to improve its approach and actions regarding the environment, the economy and the quality of life of its residents. With its vast territory of 78 km2, mainly made up of agricultural land, the municipality will focus on various sectors that affect the environment such as water management, energy consumption of buildings and its fleet of vehicles, treatment of residual waste and contaminated sites as well as active and motorized transportation.
The community will structure its actions on “The Natural Step” strategic planning method, including the “backcasting” principle based on a long term vision. A poll will be carried out among the population to target systems to be prioritized, and the public will take part in a one-day workshop with sustainable development experts to establish a common vision. The general public will also be consulted on measures to be taken via an internet discussion forum. The entire process will be overseen by a core task force reporting to an advisory committee made up of several stakeholders. This plan could serve as a model for other small agricultural municipalities with limited resources wishing to establish concrete tools and realistic objectives allowing them to adopt a sustainable 20-year vision of their territories.
