Description

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) will undertake two related feasibility studies that aim to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and leachate production from inactive landfills in the region. The Passive Landfill Gas Collection Pilot Study will test an innovative system developed by the Alberta Research Council that uses a biofilter to metabolize methane gas into less harmful substances. The pilot project will take place at two selected landfills and will use a geomembrane to collect landfill gas and direct it to the treatment area. The second feasibility study, to be conducted at the same landfill sites, will test a variety of evaporative topsoil and vegetation cover systems designed to prevent erosion on steep slopes. The test plots will seek to achieve evaporation rates that exceed the rate of precipitation, preventing moisture from reaching the underlying material and thus limiting leachate production. The combined technologies may provide an alternative to the traditional capping of landfill sites with a tight liner system that normally cracks and fails over time. The pilot projects aim to reduce methane emissions by more than 30 per cent, while also limiting the production of leachate, odour and other noxious substances.
