Description
This planning study will create an ecological footprint for corporate and community consumption utilizing water, energy, waste, and purchasing data (pesticides and various materials) and by estimating the overall input of materials (mined and manmade) consumed by the community. A series of training and public engagement sessions using The Natural Step Canada (TNS) framework will be used to guide this holistic approach to sustainable community planning to develop a common community language of sustainability and to ensure that Wolfville’s short term goals are sustainable, realistic, and cost effective. Existing programs, policies and bylaws will be evaluated as part of the planning process. The Centre for Rural Sustainability and TNS will aid also in the design of community programs, the development of a Genuine Progress Indicators (GPI) tool to monitor qualitative and quantitative aspects of the Town’s progress, and in the priorization of infrastructure decisions. It can be expected that implementation of the sustainable community plan will lead to a greenhouse gas reduction of approximately 12,188 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Additional benefits will include a decrease in water consumption and a reduction in the various chemicals entering the community.
