Description

The Town of Milton expects to almost double its population by the year 2016. To accommodate this growth in a way thatwould minimize its ecological footprint, it is working with the Green Municipal Funds on the Eco-Tech Village PilotProject - a sustainable community development project that considers all environmental aspects of community in aholistic manner. A key part of the strategy is to incorporate renewable energy wherever and however possible. Windmapping obtained from Environment Canada indicates that there is significant potential west of the Niagara Escarpment, where the Town’s urban area and hydro grid are located. The goal of this project is to install five 1.5-megawatt (MW)turbines for 7.5 MW capacity, displacing coal fired electricity generation at the margin. The potential reduction in carbondioxide (CO2) could range from 4,523 to 5,774 tonnes a year. The project will be included in the extensive communityconsultation program already being conducted in relation to the ongoing Eco-Tech Village Pilot Project and othermunicipal planning processes.
