Description
The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) will review and update its current solid waste management plan. The TNRD waste management system includes 32 waste transfer stations, five regional landfills, two landfills in Kamloops, and one in the Village of Cache Creek. The plan will look at new waste-diversion targets, source reduction strategies, innovative technologies, user-pay programs, and facility upgrades or closures. The plan will provide strategic direction for the next 20 years. The Region wishes to set and achieve greater waste reduction targets, evaluate innovative technologies to reduce the need for landfills, reduce the contamination of groundwater from landfill leachate, and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The TNRD will look at conversion technologies such as gasification and pyrolysis, as well as innovative landfill cover systems to reduce landfill gases. Goals include reducing the solid waste stream by 30 per cent per capita in the first five years; reducing the existing solid waste stream by 65 per cent over 20 years; and reducing landfill gas emissions by 350 tonnes per year.
