Description

To meet the goals of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Regional Solid Waste Management Plan (GMF 7267), the TNRD will evaluate the current solid waste and recycling system and investigate ways to improve material collection and hauling efficiency, thereby reducing operating costs. The consultants will first review the current system to analyze waste volumes and collection routes, and then map population distribution throughout the region. A computer model will organize this information and help to determine the best locations for collection. This information will help the team decide which existing sites to close or upgrade and which new locations may be required. The model will also indicate the most efficient options for transporting waste as well as infrastructure and equipment needs. Existing waste transfer stations as well as curbside collection vehicles will incorporate compaction facilities to minimize bulk. The study will also establish a network of recycling depots throughout the region, designed with compacting equipment to reduce the need for frequent collection. The specified upgrades will reduce vehicle emissions associated with waste disposal by 25 to 50 per cent . The increased diversion will reduce landfill gas emissions and soil contamination by 30 per cent each and leachate production by 10 per cent.
