Description
The City of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield developed a Sustainable Development and Environmental Action Plan (SDEAP) that built on Agenda 21 principles and went even further by focusing on environmental aspects. This approach allowed the city to develop an integrated vision for sustainable development by mobilizing all the community’s stakeholders. The goal was to ensure the efficient use of resources and the integration of sustainable development principles and enhanced environmental management in all aspects of municipal operations and services. Using documentary research and field surveys, an advisory committee and a panel of experts assessed existing circumstances and set a vision for the future, as well as SDEAP objectives. A consultant then prepared an action plan that was presented to the advisory committee and elected officials, and shared with the community through public consultations. The identification of follow-up measures, a plan for training of city staff, and communications and awareness-building activities were key components in implementation of the SDEAP. The environmental focus was just one of the innovative aspects of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield’s approach.
