Description
With the goal of expanding and upgrading its existing lagoon-based Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) system, the Township of North Glengarry will conduct a detailed design and field test of an engineered wetland-based treatment system with the capacity to treat 5,500 m3/day. The system will improve treatment efficiency and effectiveness through the use of innovative features such as insulated floating covers, aerated vertical subsurface flow wetlands, and sludge dewatering reed beds. The dewatering cells will be the first of their kind in the Province of Ontario. The sludge from the dewatering cells will reduce the volume of sludge disposed of at the landfill and potential future land application of the sludge could eliminate the need for landfill disposal completely. The WWTP upgrades will result in effluent quality meeting or exceeding Ministry of the Environment criteria and enhanced effluent discharge quality will lead to an improvement in Delisle River water quality and fish habitats. Also, the system will reduce the land requirement, make use of existing infrastructure, and be flexible to allow for adjustments to aeration and alum injection.
