Description
The Municipality of the County of Kings, NS will assess and recommend the most viable renewable energy technologies to achieve net zero energy for a new or renovated municipal building complex. The study will investigate the technical feasibility and environmental benefits of generating the total annual energy demand of the building through combined heat and power, including solar, wind, and geothermal energy. It will also address the social and economic impacts of co-locating municipal, provincial and federal operations in the Town of Kentville. The study will identify three building configuration options, which will be evaluated and compared using energy simulations as well as a risk assessment and sensitivity analysis. The Multi-Government Complex, which will be designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards, is expected to decrease energy use, generate renewable energy, cut water use and wastewater management costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 900 tonnes CO2 equivalent annually. Building the facility is expected to stimulate the local economy by attracting more visitors to the community to access government services.
