Description

This study will help the Quebec Metropolitan Community (QMC) determine the best technology for processing and disposing of organic waste. It will also aid the QMC to choose the best location for building a regional centre for processing organic waste. In conjunction with the project, a three stream waste collection program will be launched, as well as a waste reduction campaign and a public awareness campaign to reduce organic waste at the source through herbicycling (leaving grass cuttings on the lawn) and household composting (a reduction target of five per cent). In an effort to produce high-quality compost, emphasis will be placed on replacing herbicides and pesticides with less hazardous products. It is estimated that the project will result in the following reductions: 28,200 tonnes per year of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e); 114 tonnes per year of nitrogen oxides (NOx); 7.8 tonnes per year of sulphur oxides (SOx); 6.1 tonnes per year of hydrochloric acid (HCL); 4.8 tonnes per year of particulate matter; 8 tonnes per year of volatile organic compound (VOC); 25.2 tonnes per year of lead; 3.3 tonnes per year of mercury; 0.12 tonnes per year of cadmium; and 87.5 tonnes per year of carbon monoxide.
