Description

Purpose:1 . Support the Northeast BC local government partners (LGP) in preparing for a changing climate and understanding the associated risks and vulnerabilities.2. Collaboratively address climate risks at a regional and community scale through a peer network3. Increase community, public and private sector awareness of the impacts of climate change.MethodologyDevelop, and make publicly available a regional climate projections report with LGPs and Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium which includes climate impact themes.Work with LGPs, Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, and the public to initiate a community gap analysis as the first step towards a vulnerability assessment.Establish the Northeast Climate Risk Network (NeCRN).Year2Develop community-based vulnerability assessments and scope the assessment according to individual community context and needs.Continue peer mentoring through the NeCRN.Share findings and lessons learned with professional and community networks.Impact on vulnerability. NeCRN would improve communications between communities on adaptation, avoid project duplication, ease knowledge transfer, and strengthen relationships outside of the Northeast through FBC’s connections. The network would set a precedent for collaboration on resilience and continue past the project’s end as a result of the working relationships established. The regional climate projections would provide communities with high resolution climate data and climate impact backgrounders to inform decision making, vulnerability assessments. considerations for major projects (e.g. Site C). andpreparations for extreme weather events such as floods. fires, hailstorms and tornadoes. The community_x0002_driven vulnerability assessments will identify gaps, allocate resources and feed into adaptation planning.Project findings would be integrated into existing initiatives such as updates to Official Community Plans, Tumbler Ridge’s fire mitigation project, Dawson Creek’s flood mitigation project, and the Northern Rockies’s emergency response plan. Community education on project findings will help increase publicresiliency literacy. To complete this initiative, the Fraser Basin Council Society will be actively collaborating with the Climate Action Secretariat, BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. the BC Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium, and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions.
