Description

The City of Ottawa is developing a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) centered on a Brownfield Redevelopment Strategy. The Strategy will take into consideration both the economic and social benefits of brownfield redevelopment. Its main objectives are to coordinate and implement a comprehensive corporate approach to the identification, clean up and redevelopment of brownfield sites; to focus efforts on brownfields that have the greatest potential to achieve the growth objectives of the City’s Official Plan; and, to build a practical tool for sustainable development to help similar initiative across Canada. The City will use Phase I of the environmental assessment of the Bayview/Somerset site to begin development of a case study to define issues and objectives, identify constraints and opportunities, assess market conditions, evaluate development programs and analyze their financial implications, and prepare a cultural heritage planning statement. It will consider also the implications of setting minimum building code standards of R2000 (residential) and C2000 (commercial) within a brownfield redevelopment area. Completion of Phases 2 and 3 of the environmental assessment will result in a realistic and applicable template for transforming brownfield sites countrywide.
