Description
The City of Rimouski will set up an ecocentre at the existing Rimouski landfill site to encourage the recovery, reuse, recycling and diversion of waste materials not collected through the Rimouski-Neigette Regional County Municipality (RCM) curbside service for recyclables. Currently, residents of Rimouski and four of the ten other muncipalities that make up the RCM use the Rimouski landfill, which consists of an engineered landfill site and a dry materials disposal site. The remaining municipalities use one of the four RCM trench landfills. It is estimated that within three years of establishing an ecocentre, approximately 16,800 metric tonnes of waste could be diverted from the Rimouski landfill site, resulting in a diversion rate of 50.2 percent. Benefits expected include: environmentally-sound management of resources and extended life expectancy of the Rimouski engineered landfill site through reuse, recycling and recovery of waste materials; greater access to waste disposal services, and; the combining of efforts from companies and organizations in the RCM that are already working to recycle waste materials.
