Description

Based on the conclusions of this study, the Borough of LaSalle will devise an implementation plan to establish an integrated eco-centre to receive residential and industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) waste. It is expected that approximately 20,000 metric tonnes (MT) of waste would be collected at the eco-centre each year of which 14,000 MT would be recycled. By centralizing waste collection and reducing travel to the closest disposal site 20 kilometres (km) away, a 44 MT per year reduction of carbon dioxide emissions could be realized. In addition, the cumulative effect of diverting 14,000 MT of waste each year would result in a reduction of more than 30 million m3 of methane (CH4) over 100 years (an annual average of 456 MT). It is estimated that part of the new eco-centre’s operational budget could be covered by the ICI sector landfill tipping fee savings. This would make the eco-centre one of the first municipal operations where waste management, through voluntary contribution and collective management, is funded, in part, by the landfill budget.
