Description

Transit Windsor, an agency of the City of Windsor, will develop a Transit Master Plan and Ridership Growth Strategy to meet the Windsor Area Long Range Transportation Plan’s goal of doubling transit ridership to 11.6 million riders per year by 2017. The purpose of the Strategy is threefold: to identify the most effective and efficient approach to increase ridership, to consider a regional approach for public transit, and to focus on environmental stewardship. Improving accessibility of public transportation, car-pooling, cycling and walking, in addition to parking management and land use strategies, will be addressed. Study results implementation could achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the number of single occupancy vehicles and integrating various modes of transportation. This would result in less traffic and congestion and a reduction from tailpipe emissions that contribute to poor air quality, smog, climate change and ozone depletion. It is estimated that per passenger kilometre, the following emissions reductions can be achieved: 270 grams of carbon dioxide, one gram of nitrogen oxides, and 1.4 grams of volatile organic compounds. This would lead to a total potential reduction of one million tonnes of air pollutants per year.
