Description
The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) faces challenges in planning for and ensuring sustainable infrastructure based on projected growth rates over the next 40 years. The GVRD plans to use MetroQuest, a modelling tool that permits regional-level analysis of different development scenarios. The output is highly visual, supported by social, economic, and environmental measurements, and includes indicators of land use, transportation, housing, air quality, energy, and fiscal matters. The anticipated results are improvements in development patterns, better air quality, stronger connections to transit, and the preservation of rural and agricultural lands. This project will support several planning processes: the City of Vancouver's Climate Change Action Plan implementation strategy; an emerging regional effort to “fast-track” implementation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction programs; planning for the Richmond Airport Vancouver Rapid Transit Line; the Provincial “Gateway” transportation plans; the Sustainable Region Initiative (SRI) and its associated Liveable Region Strategic Plan update; and water and liquid waste infrastructure planning. The resulting plans should help reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by more than 29 million tonnes over the next 40 years.
