Description

The Township of Madawaska operates two solid waste transfer stations (Wilno and Radcliffe) and one solid waste disposal site (Bark Lake). Wastes from both transfer stations are transported to the Bark Lake disposal site, where they are received and covered on a daily basis. Bulk recyclables such as scrap metal and tires are collected and transferred routinely to designated recycling/reuse facilities from these sites. Originally sunset for February 1, 2007, Bark Lakes’s life span has been extended to December 31, 2008, but it is operating under an emergency Certificate of Approval and an environmental assessment is underway. To increase diversion and reduce waste sent to landfill, the Township will implement its solid waste management strategic plan. Initiatives include: expansion of areas that receive curbside collection of recyclables; introduction of a curbside organics collection program; development of an extensive industrial, commercial and institutional recycling program and depot food waste collection using Molok technology; construction of a permanent hazardous or special waste depot, and; more frequent special collection event days for municipal hazardous solid waste. A comprehensive promotion and education strategy will support these activities. The Township will also amend waste by-laws and introduce mandatory recycling, bag limits, and changes in collection frequency. With these activities, the Township anticipates that it can significantly extend the life of landfill, reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the composting of organics, set an example for other small municipalities, and increase taxpayers service levels.
