Description
The Adaptation Changemakers Project will train and build agents of change for climate adaptation in communicates across Canada. Meaningful climate change responses draw on the skill-sets of many stakeholders and decision-makers, including municipal. provincial. and federal governments, private sector specialists. industry associations. planners, health professionals. and othersl each stakeholder has a unique and key role to play in helping to adapt to the effects of a changing climate. The Changemakers Project will harness these stakeholders and decision-makers to identify local climate impacts and the actions that each can take to reduce vulnerability to climate change impacts locally. Centered around building capacity to engage stakeholders, assess vulnerability and risk, and develop animplementation-ready local adaptation plan, the project will result in adaptation being integrated across both the municipality and wider community. With technical guidance from ICLEI staff and Regional Experts, participants will initiate their adaptation effort with local stakeholders. assess their risks, and develop a local action plan. Participating municipalities will take part in three group-wide National Workshops and then transfer the knowledge and techniques they learned into localized workshops where they will involve local stakeholders (ie. other city departments. conservation authorities, First Nations, utilities, local businesses, public health. etc.) to work with climate information, assess vulnerability and risk and work collaboratively to develop their local action plan. The results each participating community can expect are: I) local climate impact report, 2) vulnerability and risk assessment, 3) implementation ready adaptation pl.an, and 4) engaged network of local stakeholders or Changemakers. The crucial final step is the Lasting Legacy phase which ensures the lessons and insights gleaned from this project are shared in meaningful and engaging ways with municipalities across the country.Three strategic partners have been secured for The Adaptation Changemakers Project to fill the role of Regional Experts. They will reinforce the capacity building efforts of ICLEI Canada by lending their expertise to the municipalities in support of their stakeholder engagement. climate modeling. risk prioritization and plan development activities. The Strategic Partners are Adaptation for Climate Change Team (ACT), Simon Fraser Universityl Partners for Action, University of Waterlool and Amec Foster Wheeler, Environment and Infrastructure Team.
