Description
The objective of this initiative—the Climate Resilience Exchange—is to improve the definition, selection and implementation of coordinated actions (projects, studies or response plans) to reduce the vulnerability of partner municipalities to climate change impacts. Municipalities in the Edmonton Capital Region are interconnected in many ways sharing infrastructure, services and resources, and facing similar climate impacts. These communities already cooperate onsustainability and environmental management issues. Significant economies-of-scale and other mutually beneficial synergies exist from coordinated action on managing climate impacts. Our initiative seeks to realize these opportunities. Our goal is to support partner municipalities successfully implement two or three coordinated, sustainable climate adaptation actions. and thereby reduce regional vulnerability to climate impacts. The climate change impacts to be addressed will be informed by the joint priorities of our partners. The chosen actions and implementation process will be informed by best practices from mentor communities. These results are achieved in five phases1. Research and engagement with individual municipalities to characterize perceived risks priorities, barriers. and shared assets and services.2. Convene a workshop with all participating municipalities to define common priority risks (initial discussions suggest priorities include strong winds. drought, extreme precipitation. river flooding environmental impacts and wildfires) that would be best addressed through coordinated actions Identify 3–4 priority risks3. For each priority risk, develop a portfolio of actions by connecting partner municipalities with mentor municipalities and Subject Matter Experts to learn about best practices and successful implementation elsewhere. Prioritize and implement at least one project for each priority risk.4. Prepare Coordinated Adaptation Strategy for Capital Region and project implementation reports5. Develop on-line ’good practice library ’ for project outputs to support ongoing collaboration on climate adaptation in the Capital Region, and share lessons with other metropolitan areas. All One Sky Foundation has acquired the support of six partner organizations and Subject Matter Experts who will bring their expertise. resources and municipal connections to the project. These partnerships will significantly improve the outcomes of this projects ensuring outcomes are based on the best available knowledge and good practices, and are integrated. Our partners Include: the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre. The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute, B.A. Blackwell and Associates Ltd Associated Engineering. and Ebbwater Consulting.
