Description
The City of Quinte West will conduct a field test to remediate an historical property on its shoreline and turn it into a community waterfront park incorporating a constructed wetland (as part of the municipal stormwater system), hiking trails and educational and interpretive measures. The site is known as the Murata Erie North America (MENA) property, a former manufacturing facility 3.08 hectares in size and located within 300 meters of the Bay of Quinte. Now City-owned, data indicates that volatile organic compounds from the site are reaching the Bay. A remedial options study was conducted and several possible solutions were considered, the best being to install between six and 10 groundwater pumping wells along the shoreline to create a barrier. Water pumped and collected will receive preliminary treatment on site, then it will be pumped into an infiltration gallery, similar to a “weeping system” used at most rural properties to treat waste water. In order to accelerate the rate of remediation, several leading-edge, in-situ remedial technologies, including biostimulation and chemical oxidation techniques, will be identified and integrated into the treatment system infiltration gallery. The field test will define the final treatment system design for the site. The objective is to improve the water quality and mitigate the affected groundwater from migrating into the Bay of Quinte. Upon completion of the remedial efforts, a monitoring program will be implemented to ensure there are no further environmental risks.
