Description
The City of North Bay is examining alternative options for using the landfill gas generated at the Merrick Landfill site. A landfill gas management plan is not required because of its size; however, the City wishes to address all environmental issues related to the operation. The feasibility study will include an assessment of the quality and quantity of gas; utilization options (beyond current flaring), including the use of waste heat in the leachate treatment process, the feasibility of power generation, including grid connection and power purchase agreement requirements, and the potential for carbon credit revenue; evaluation of the costs and benefits of each option; assessment of equipment and design options; and recommendations for the preferred utilization option, including detailed design and specification work. The City anticipates that the results of the study will support the construction of a green power supply. Approximately 1,500 kilowatt hours could be generated annually, offsetting electricity generation from fossil fuels and diverting 12,800 tonnes of CO2 each year. In addition, it is expected that energy savings would be achieved if waste heat is utilized to preheat leachate for passive treatment, as opposed to using costly, energy intensive, high-technology processes.
