Description

The vacant former St. Joseph School site is located in one of Regina’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods. This project provides a unique opportunity to use sustainable housing development as a catalyst for the neighbourhood’s revitalization. The City of Regina, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and Communities of Tomorrow (a Province of Saskatchewan initiative that focuses on developing sustainable communities) is proposing a sustainable neighbourhood plan that will integrate urban planning, sustainable buildings, renewable energy, and other green technologies in a community-scale project. An integrated renewable energy system is the main feature of this project. A future capital implementation project could include a district energy system; community water efficiency and stormwater management; electrical efficiency and management; building envelope and energy systems; building orientation and exterior features; passive solar and wind-assisted building energy systems; solar domestic hot water and space heating; and underground interseasonal thermal energy storage. The total estimated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction compared to the baseline for conventional development is 520 tonnes per year, or a 60 per cent reduction in GHG emissions. This amounts to an estimated minimum of 21 kilo-tonnes of GHG emissions avoided over a 40-year period.
