Description

The Comox Strathcona Regional District will develop a strategic sustainable development plan to manage growth in the Comox Valley and prioritize capital infrastructure projects that promote sustainability. The first phase of the study will identify and analyze the most important trends and challenges impacting the region. Staff from local government jurisdictions will develop policy goals to deal with these emerging challenges. The second phase will involve businesses, developers and the community at large in a collective process. Through a series of workshops, the goals and strategic vision of the community will be formulated. The final phase will be the development of action plans designed to implement the chosen policies. A consistent set of sustainability principles for the whole region will allow local governments to cooperate and manage cross-border developments. The plan will include strategies to deal with waste management, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, transportation, new building developments and the renovation of existing infrastructure. The plan will guide development in such a way as to minimize its negative impacts on local ecosystems. It will likely reduce CO2-equivalent GHG emissions by 321,040 tonnes and save about 12 million litres of water per day.
