Description
The City of Ottawa (City), a member of the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program, is targeting a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, relative to 1990 levels, by 2007 for corporate business activities and by 2012 for community emissions. In this study the City will develop a GHG inventory for both groups of emitters from all of its amalgamated municipalities, as well as an air quality inventory and monitoring station network. The inventories and assessment will serve as the framework for implementing actions in the City’s Air Quality and Climate Change Management Plan. The inventories and monitoring network will enable the City to achieve PCP milestones 1 and 2, describe current emissions with accuracy, and predict the effectiveness of new and current initiatives, such as cogeneration, building retrofits and transportation programs. It is estimated that through the implementation of initiatives under the Air Quality and Climate Change Management Plan, the City will reduce its corporate GHG emissions by approximately 25,491 tonnes per year and community GHG emissions by 6 million tonnes per year, achieving its 20 per cent reduction relative to 1990 levels.
