Description

This study will examine the feasibility of providing a collection and composting service for organic waste for residents ofsix municipalities in and around Verchères. The Regional County Municipality already has a collection of hazardousdomestic waste, a bulky refuse collection and selective collection of residential and industrial waste. If organic wastewere also collected, to be composted in an existing nearby facility, the municipalities could divert from landfill almost 50per cent of all the waste they produce. Collecting and composting organic waste would reduce the greenhouse gasesthat the waste produces as it biodegrades after being buried in landfill. Diverting organic waste would also reduceleachate production. The compost produced would improve soil productivity in the agricultural and urban areas aroundthe municipalities. The study would assess the environmental impact and the economic and technical feasibility of theproject.
