Description
This project is a unique opportunity for cooperation between a First Nation reserve and a municipality and will increasecommunity understanding of global climate change and solutions available to communities and citizens to reduce theircollective impact. Based on a systems approach to community enviro-socio-economic needs, the Hishinski EconomicDevelopment Corporation Inc., the Hupacasath First Nation and the City of Port Alberni will co-develop a mini-hydroelectricity project to provide enough green power for 950 homes. Environmental assessment will be extended to areas offisheries, vegetation, wildlife, heritage and archaeology. Estimates suggest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions could bereduced by 4,000 to 5,000 tonnes annually, the equivalent of taking 1,000 motor vehicles off the road.
