Description

This project will study the feasibility of using a methane oxidation cover to cut in half the amount of methane and carbondioxide produced at the Hinton Regional Landfill. If the technology is effective, it would reduce greenhouse gasemissions by 500 tonnes of methane per year, generating reduction credits under the federal government's voluntarygreenhouse gas reduction challenge. The study will look at the engineering design, monitor surface emissions, estimatethe amount of greenhouse gas reduction, and evaluate the economic viability of the project. If using a MethOx cover issuccessful in reducing methane emissions, the process could be repeated at landfills across the country. It would beparticularly useful for smaller landfills and those located too far from potential users to make methane gas extraction andutilization an economically viable option.
