Description
Brazeau County will study the use of a Solar Aquatics System (SAS) as a wastewater treatment method to replace the Hamlet of Cynthia’s existing single-cell wastewater lagoon. SAS technology combines the energy of the sun and the natural functions of plants and animals to purify human waste. A relatively new approach to wastewater treatment, it has proven to be capable of replacing aerated lagoons and other primary treatment systems while providing a high level of water treatment. The study will determine the ecological, technical and financial feasibility of SAS technology compared to traditional technologies in a cold climate environment. The project will involve detailed investigation of existing SAS systems, an ecological site assessment, energy and economic analysis, and specific design required to make the project suit local circumstances. The study will establish a model for other cold climate communities with ageing lagoons. If successful, the County will use the technology within the next five years in several of its other communities, including Breton, Buck Creek, Lindale, Lodge pole, Rocky Rapids and Violet Grove.
