Description
The Association francophone des municipalités du Nouveau-Brunswick (AFMNB) in partnership with the Municipality of Atholville and eight other municipalities (Beresford, Caraquet, Grande-Anse, Haut-Madawaska, Maisonnette, Neguac, Rivière-Verte, and Saint-Léonard) will develop a climate change mitigation plan. This plan consists of an inventory of GHG emissions and an action plan for each of the participating municipalities aimed at reducing corporate emissions by at least 20% and community emissions by at least 6%. It will also incorporate a community energy planning approach that will allow for the participation of various local stakeholders. This approach will provide a global picture of the energy used and generated for the community. This methodology will help identify areas where conservation and efficiency measures can be implemented. The method assesses the potential for local energy production, in particular renewable energy, and the potential for using smart technologies. This approach allows for better management of energy production and consumption, lower energy costs, and reduced GHG emissions. The plan will have a positive impact on communities by not only improving their quality of life but also by saving them money. For each municipality, targets and strategies will be defined taking into account their emission levels, needs, resources, and specificities. The AFMNB and its team of experts will use the methodology and approach of the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program. FCM’s PCP program tools and resources will be tailored to meet the needs of the participating municipalities. The process for carrying out the work and activities related to this approach can be summarized in four main phases of consultation with participants, stakeholders, and community partners:- The first phase consists of information sessions to present the project- The second phase involves workshops with the participating municipalities, stakeholders, and community partners- The third phase involves a consultative decision-making process on the preliminary action plan and the definition of the GHG emission reduction target- The fourth phase consists of presenting the action plans to the municipal councils for adoption. At the end of the project, the inventories and action plans of the participating municipalities will be made available to the public through a website.
