Description
The City of Revelstoke and Downie Timber Ltd., the city's major employer, have signed a Memorandum of Co-operationto develop a community energy project using Downie's waste wood. The project consists of a combined heat and energyplant burning waste wood from Downie's operations. The plant would generate heat for Downie's dry kilns, and hot waterthat would be piped through an in-ground system to Revelstoke's commercial district. The plant might also produceelectricity that could be distributed through the grid. This plant would allow Revelstoke to decrease its dependence onfossil fuel, and so reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project would provide another way of disposing of the wastewood, reduce fly ash and smoke, create additional jobs at the plant, and give Downie a secure supply of energy at astable, less expensive price. This would generate a new source of revenue for Revelstoke, which would operate theutility. If feasible, the project is a model for other communities dependent on forest resources.
