Description
This pilot project has been developed from GMEF 2578, a Community Energy System (CES) feasibility study whichresulted in a finding that in developing areas, a system of smaller plants distributed throughout the proposed servicearea can be more suitable because it allows a CES to grow by segments as customers sign on. The Council of the Cityof North Vancouver accepted the study findings and created the Lonsdale Energy Corporation in 2003 with a mandate isto install and manage a distributed district energy system to provide heating and domestic hot water to buildings in aspecific section of the City. The first stage of this project will be implemented in the Lower Lonsdale. A total of 20buildings will ultimately be connected - representing two and a half million square feet of mixed commercial and multiunitresidential space. The project is unique in Canada, has generated considerable interest from other municipalitiesand is strongly supported by the Community Energy Systems Group within the CANMET Energy Technology Centre(CETC) at Natural Resources Canada. It has a realistic potential for replication under reasonable economic conditions.
