Description

To obtain the tools for long-term planning of the community’s future and align it with environmental protection, economic diversification and enhancement of residents’ quality of life, the Côte-de-Beaupré RCM will prepare a Sustainable Community Plan (SCP) entitled “Côte-de-Beaupré: a Healthy Region”. Covering an area of nearly 5000 km2, the RCM wants to manage the current real-estate boom sustainably, enhance the public’s buy-in and feeling of belonging, reinvigorate local tourism and establish a dialogue with various regional partners and the public. Environmental protection, improvement of water and waste management, promotion of sustainable transportation, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction will be covered in the plan.
To prepare its SCP, the RCM will draw inspiration from the local Agenda 21 and The Natural Step processes. The SCP will be developed in three main phases: creation of a Strategic Sustainability Plan (SSP), update of the Sustainable Development Management Plan (SDMP), and review of existing management and planning tools on the basis of the issues and orientations targeted by the SCP and SDMP. Public consultation activities are planned throughout the process. The RCM will also develop a website, as communications are a very important part of the process.
The Côte-de-Beaupré Sustainable Development Management Plan will be the first in Quebec and will serve as an example for other regional bodies.
