Description
The City of St. Agathe des Monts will create a plan for the protection and development of its natural environment. The City believes that this plan is essential to help the municipality create integrated land use, waste management, water and wastewater treatment, transportation, and development policies that will allow it to effectively manage its natural resources in a sustainable manner. Once the proposed plan is implemented, the City can develop an integrated and sustainable set of policies and by-laws which will allow the municipality to protect its natural resources, maintain and improve its soil, air and water quality, and develop in a sustainable manner. Related to air quality, the City expects that the plan will set a goal to protect its current tree coverage to maintain its clean air and to continue to capture greenhouse gases. Concerning water quality, the City expects to establish a 20 per cent reduction of water pollution from fertilizer use, leaking septic tanks, and riverbank and lakeshore erosion. Examples of measures that the plan may recommend include creating policies to conserve water and protect watersheds and floodplains, as well as implementing riverbank restoration projects. The plan will also recommend environmental indicators to measure the success and failure of the City in protecting its natural environment.
