Description

The City of Mont Tremblant will conduct a feasibility study to investigate using B20 biodiesel for its municipal vehicle fleet as a technically viable and cost-effective way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fuel expenses. Biodiesel, produced from animal fats and recycled cooking oil, is 2.5 times more biodegradable than petroleum diesel and is relatively non-toxic. The feasibility study will be carried out before a full-scale introduction of the fuel to assess problems and solutions associated with operating a fleet of B20 biodiesel-powered vehicles in cold temperatures, as well as issues related to supply, use and changing fuel sources. The study will help the city minimize its operational risks in the field, better understand the costs of this project and may also serve as a model for fleet operators in other municipalities. It is estimated that using B20 biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent. If all municipal vehicles in Mont Tremblant converted to B20, the estimated annual reduction in emissions would be 760 tonnes.
