Description
The Régie d’assainissement des eaux de la Vallée du Richelieu (RAEVR), comprising four member towns, will study two methods of treating its sewage sludge. The project will determine whether technology, anaerobic treatment, composting or a combined approach is most feasible and beneficial for the communities. The first phase of the study will examine the viability of installing an anaerobic digester to generate energy from biogas. Following an analysis of the composition and volume of the effluent sludge, the team will prepare an energy balance report for the proposed system. The study will also look into pathogen removal, potential energy savings and related greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions. Phase two will evaluate the possibility of installing closed composting facilities on adjacent land, which would function alone or in conjunction with anaerobic digestion. Following visits to the proposed site, the project team will compare several system designs and perform cost analyses. Both options, if implemented, will eliminate the sludge currently sent to landfill, amounting to 4,750 tonnes per year. As a result, 6,507 tonnes of CO2-equivalent GHG emissions normally generated by landfill gases and transportation will be reduced annually.
