Description
The grant-funded staff person will implement initiatives that will produce a lasting improvement in municipal GHG emissions reduction. The first required phase of work is to refresh a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction plan. The plan will update a baseline GHG emissions inventory, set emissions reduction targets, and outline actions to reduce GHG emissions for municipal operations and the community in all areas of municipal activity, including energy use, transportation planning, land use, waste and water management. The second required phase of work for the grant-funded staff person is to implement operational and institutional changes that will help ensure long-term GHG emissions reduction after the grant period. The third phase of work will be to carry out the preparatory work to be able to implement climate mitigation projects and the grant-funded staff person is required to move activities from the planning stage to the implementation stage over the course of the grant period. In Year 1, the Recipient plans to: Implement the action items in listed in the Township of Selwyn's Climate Change Action Plan, which could include:• Facilitate climate change friendly business operations and practices• Facilitate low carbon energy generation and local energy security• Identify climate change risks and prepare for potential impacts• Encourage civic engagement around climate change• Foster a culture of climate change awareness• Prepare for the health impacts associated with a changing climateImplement the action items listed in the Township of Selwyn's Corporate Climate Change Action Plan, monitor progress and report the results of the items implemented, which could include:• Enhance operational efficiency of the water services system• Institutionalize energy efficiency and low carbon thinking into the organization• Enhance operational efficiency of existing buildings• Improve environmental performance of existing municipal facilities• Transition the municipal fleet to be more efficient and less carbon emitting• Reduce the amount of organic waste generated through municipal operations• Strengthen land use policy and the development review process to better support climate change mitigation and adaptationImplement the action items in listed in the Township of Selwyn's Community Climate Change Action Plan, which could include:• Facilitate alternatives to single-occupant vehicle use to reduce frequency of personal vehicle use• Support localization of the food system• Reduce the amount of waste generated by residents that contribute to GHG emissions• Protect and enhance natural assets• Facilitate best management practices for low emission farming and climate change adaptation• Build an active transportation network and support active transportation• Encourage purchasing of locally produced food In Year 2, the Recipient intends to:Implement the action items in listed in the Township of Selwyn's Climate Change Action Plan, which could include:• Facilitate climate change friendly business operations and practices• Facilitate low carbon energy generation and local energy security• Identify climate change risks and prepare for potential impacts• Encourage civic engagement around climate change• Foster a culture of climate change awareness• Prepare for the health impacts associated with a changing climateImplement the action items listed in the Township of Selwyn's Corporate Climate Change Action Plan, monitor progress and report the results of the items implemented, which could include:• Enhance operational efficiency of the water services system• Institutionalize energy efficiency and low carbon thinking into the organization• Enhance operational efficiency of existing buildings• Improve environmental performance of existing municipal facilities• Transition the municipal fleet to be more efficient and less carbon emitting• Reduce the amount of organic waste generated through municipal operations• Strengthen land use policy and the development review process to better support climate change mitigation and adaptationImplement the action items in listed in the Township of Selwyn's Community Climate Change Action Plan, which could include:• Facilitate alternatives to single-occupant vehicle use to reduce frequency of personal vehicle use• Support localization of the food system• Reduce the amount of waste generated by residents that contribute to GHG emissions• Protect and enhance natural assets• Facilitate best management practices for low emission farming and climate change adaptation• Build an active transportation network and support active transportation• Encourage purchasing of locally produced food
