Description

The Town of Smithers will conduct an energy efficiency feasibility study in relation to its plan to improve the Smithers Civic Arena and build a second ice surface addition. Proposed improvements include a potential heat recovery system for the heating requirements of the adjacent Bulkey Valley Regional District Pool and Racquet Courts, and the Smithers Curling Club, high efficiency lighting, optimized and automated system operations, infrared sensor ice temperature control, integration of refrigeration systems with heating and ventilation, seasonal heat and cold storage, radiant heating and geothermal technology. Based on preliminary estimates, the Town of Smithers anticipates that a new energy efficient ice rink, along with retrofits and system upgrades to existing buildings, would reduce overall GHG emissions by 50 per cent or more and reduce overall energy use of existing facilities by 20 to 50 per cent. If the feasibility study is successful, the Town will proceed with project implementation.
