Description

The Town of Malartic is conducting Phase I, II and III Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) on two vacant properties. The abandoned lots were used as a gas station and commercial garage, and are presumed contaminated. The Town would like to move forward with remediation of both properties for future development. Concerns are that the contamination may extend into the groundwater, which could affect wells in the Town, and that the soil on the adjoining properties may be affected. The exact types and amounts of contaminants are unknown, and will be the focus of the ESAs. In addition, the full extent of the contamination will be defined, the most appropriate remediation method will be identified, and the costs of the recommended remediation will be determined. Once the ESAs are completed, the Town will be able to undertake site remediation of both properties. The remediation work will significantly reduce the level of pollutants in the soil and groundwater of the affected properties, ensuring that the contamination levels meet the required standards for institutional, residential or commercial development. This will protect Town residents’ health.
