Description

The City of Surrey, a member of Partners for Climate Protection (PCP), will develop a Community Climate Action Strategy that will complement its recently adopted Corporate Emissions and Clean Energy action plans, and the city’s 2008 Sustainability Charter. The Community Climate Action Strategy will address building, transportation, waste and energy infrastructure sectors throughout Surrey, with an objective of reducing per capita greenhouse gas emissions in Surrey by 33 per cent as of 2030, and by 80 per cent as of 2050 using a 2007 baseline. Together, the community-wide and municipality’s existing corporate energy action plans will fulfill PCP Milestones 1 to 3.
Working with a team of consultants, who will use both technical analysis and public consultation to identify ways to achieve the strategy’s objectives, a city staff team will review and recommend ways to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The completed strategy will identify initiatives to reduce energy consumption, promote distributed energy generation, and encourage business investment in the clean energy sector; as well as ways to expand the city’s newly implemented district energy systems.
Surrey will develop and promote the Community Climate Action Strategy through extensive consultations with staff, stakeholders and community members. The city will use its website and various social media tools to launch the project and to maintain ongoing communications with stakeholders. These communications activities will be augmented by outreach work with community groups such as churches and non-profit organizations.
