Description

Once a dynamic industrial centre, the City of Shawinigan now faces several challenges that are provoking real concern, including its economic decline, the significant presence of soil contamination and poor public transit service, among others. Representing a city and MRC since early 2002 and consequently forced to establish a development plan and urban plan that are adapted to this new reality, the new City of Shawinigan will create sustainable urban planning tools to restore the quality of its environment and ensure its long-term survival and to better prepare for the future of the community. It will establish its development plan and its urban plan based on a strategic planning process. This process will serve to build a clear plan of action based on the sustainable development model focusing first on environmental issues (water, transportation, soil contamination, energy, residual matter, natural and heritage assets), social concerns (rejuvenation of the population, family policy) and economic questions (job creation, revitalization of the regional economy). The objective is to develop management tools that will be integrated with existing tools and will allow the City to frame and orient development in a sustainability perspective.
