Description

The Corporation of Delta planned to study the feasibility of expanding and retrofitting its community recreation facility, the Sungod Recreation Centre, to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The research team analyzed potential design retrofits for the building and explored options for its proposed expansion. This involved looking at the building envelope (the space between the inside and outside of the building); pool systems and procedures; heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment; solar water heating systems; and lighting upgrades. The team then selected the best options based on capital costs, energy savings, cost savings, Silver LEED certification requirements, and opportunities to use the new equipment and processes in other municipal facilities. This project was not an isolated one, since Delta had adopted a policy whereby all municipal new buildings and retrofits were to achieve a minimum LEED Silver designation. The goal of the study was to provide options for a more sustainable design of the existing building and its expansion, leading to an annual reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 374 tonnes, or a 24 per cent reduction for this facility.
