Description

Sudbury plans a feasibility study to develop a Community Energy Action Plan. The study will focus on the benefits ofenergy efficiency in the community at large and identify viable renewable energy options. The goal is to locally produce50 per cent of Sudbury's energy requirements. Sudbury spends over $250 million dollars annually on energy services. These funds go outside the community and do not contribute to local economic development. The goal of the communityenergy plan will be to develop strategies to reverse this trend. Sudbury's interest in developing a community energyaction plan stems from its efforts to promote energy efficiency in internal municipal facilities and operations. Now,through its Local Action Plan for Climate Protection known as EARTHCARE Sudbury, it is expanding this approach tothe community at large. This effort will focus on energy efficiency and influencing energy use through site design, landuse patterns, and transportation planning. Energy use in turn affects air quality, affordability, health, land use, and localeconomic development.
