Description
The Municipality of Saint-Étienne-de-Beauharnois will be carrying out a climate mitigation study to expand and improve its infrastructure in order to promote active transportation and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This initiative follows several investments made over the past decade, including the extension of sidewalks and the regional bicycle network. It consists of planning the extension of the cycling network over 650m, securing an intersection and developing pedestrian crossings in order to improve user safety. The study will propose options, assess the costs of implementation and prepare an action plan. It will present a preliminary version of the infrastructure development plans: sidewalks, bridges, cycle paths, etc.The project will reduce GHG emissions since it aims to allow a modal shift towards means of transport that do not generate any GHGs.Currently, 11.8% of the internal displacements in the Municipality are not motorized. This represents 31,390 km per year travelled in active transportation. This project aims to increase the percentage of active transportation to 25% by 2023. The increase from 11.8% to 25% in the modal share would reduce the annual distance travelled by motorised transport by 48,180 km. This represents an annual GHG reduction of 11.5 T CO2 equivalent.Safe infrastructure for active transportation not only helps to lessen the negative impacts of climate change through reduced GHG emissions, but presents many opportunities for improving overall community wellbeing. Having access to a cyclepaths and sidewalks can increase rates of active transportation and result in personal and community-wide health and economic benefits.
