Description
The District of Shelburne will assess the environmental, economic and social impacts of building a new waste transfer station for the efficient transportation and handling of municipal solid waste. This study will help the municipality to meet one of the key objectives of its 2010 Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, to ensure that waste to landfill is minimized and all recyclables and compost are handled locally.
The District will evaluate the energy consumption and efficiency of the current system, in which residents dispose of compost, recyclables and residual waste through bi-weekly curbside collection. The municipality will then investigate the feasibility of a waste transfer station to compact all waste streams before delivery to the regional landfill site, in order to reduce fuel consumption costs and associated greenhouse gas emissions. The study will also assess options for an accessible public sorting station and a materials reuse and exchange program. The municipality expects a public sorting station will optimize curbside collection services by minimizing the amount of waste to be collected, eliminating the need to interrupt collection services for delivery to landfill, and further reducing transportation costs. The implementation of a local waste transfer facility will also create employment and enhance public education and awareness of municipal and provincial waste management initiatives and regulations. The station would initially service the residents of Eastern Shelburne County, with the potential to service the entire county as well as neighbouring areas.
