Description
The City of Calgary will develop an action plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from municipal and community-wide activities. The City has already prepared a sustainability vision through the imagineCALGARY Urban Sustainability Plan. This vision includes short- and medium-term targets for GHG emissions. To achieve the goals set out in this vision and other GHG-reduction initiatives, the City will engage the public and major stakeholders to help identify and assess emission reduction opportunities and recommend a course of action. The analysis of options will result in the first ever “Carbon Wedge” report for a Canadian city. The project team will develop a community GHG plan and a framework for ongoing implementation of GHG emissions reduction activities in the community. The project will include regular monitoring and reporting. The City will also develop a methodology for integrating GHG considerations into its own daily decision making. Reducing GHG emissions will have economic, environmental and social benefits for the community, including business and technology development, community development, improved air quality and a smaller ecological footprint.
